HC Deb 12 March 1946 vol 420 cc922-3
2. Sir Stanley Reed

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether, in view of the shortage of coal, it is now proposed to proceed with the recommendation of the expert committee which reported on the Severn barrage and hydro-electric project to construct a new tidal model and to give the dock authorities the opportunity of being represented on a committee of hydraulic experts who would supervise the construction and operation of the new model.

Mr. Shinwell

This matter is under review, but I am not yet in a position to make a statement.

Sir S. Reed

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he will not treat this matter as urgent? It has taken two years to construct the model and with coal at 39s. 6d. a ton this is an economic proposition.

Mr. Shinwell

In relation to the shortage of coal, I must say that this scheme would hardly be of much assistance because it would take eight years to construct.
