HC Deb 12 March 1946 vol 420 c927
29. Mr. James Callaghan

asked the Minister of Labour what groups it is hoped to reach by 31st December if it is possible to demobilise down to strengths of 650,000, 175 coo and 275,000 men in the Army, Navy and R.A.F. respectively.

Mr. Isaacs

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Cheltenham (Mr. Lipson) on 5th March, a copy of which I am sending him.

Mr. Callaghan

If, as 1 assumed, that was a refusal could I ask the Minister if he realises that now he has agreed to publish the numbers in every group below 50, all sorts of unofficial estimates will be made, and will he not avoid disappointment by giving an official estimate?

Mr. Isaacs

My non. Friend says, "Assuming this is a refusal." If he looks at my answer, he will find that it is not so.

Mr. Callaghan

But is it not a fact that we have not yet been given the highest group it is hoped to reach by 31st December in all the Services?
