HC Deb 07 March 1946 vol 420 c480
13. Mr. Wilson Harris

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General at how many post offices in the United Kingdom Savings Bank business is, and is not, transacted.

Mr. Burke

Savings Bank business is transacted at 18,380 post offices in the United Kingdom. There are about 5,800 post offices at which Savings Bank business is not transacted.

Mr. Harris

Is any attempt being made to increase the number of post offices at which Savings Bank business is transacted? Their importance in connection with the National Savings Movement is obvious.

Mr. Burke

We are very anxious to do so, but where we only get one or two transactions in the course of a month, it is not practicable. There are 300,000 savings groups in the country selling certificates and savings stamps, and the Savings Movement is not being impeded.

Mr. Lipson

Before closing sub-post offices is the question of Savings Bank business taken into account?

Mr. Burke

All of these things are considered.
