HC Deb 06 March 1946 vol 420 c333
54. Mr. W. Shepherd

asked the Minister of Food if he will consider the importation of dried or dehydrated bananas, since these could be imported without special shipping and provide a concentrated and valuable food stuff.

Dr. Summerskill

One thousand two hundred tons of dried bananas were imported in 1945, and arrangements have already been made to import a quantity in the current year.

Mr. Shepherd

Can the hon. Lady say what the quantity is for the current year?

Dr. Summerskill

Arrangements have been made to import 600 tons of dried bananas from the British Cameroons.

Mr. Shepherd

Does not the hon. Lady think that that quantity is absolutely inadequate, and will she see that it is increased?

Dr. Summerskill

If there is an increased demand for this commodity in spite of our imports of fresh bananas, we shall certainly consider it.
