HC Deb 05 March 1946 vol 420 cc165-6
36. Dr. Little

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will expedite the demobilisation of those serving in His Majesty's Forces for whose release the university authorities have asked, in order to enable them to continue and complete their studies at the earliest possible moment.

Mr. Isaacs

Releases under the Class B scheme for university students are being made as quickly as possible and approximately 3,250 students were reported as released in Class B up to 15th February, the latest date for which information is available.

Dr. Little

Does the Minister recognize that many students are suffering very serious grievances owing to the slowness of their demobilisation? Is he further aware that one of my own constituents, a captain in the Army, was sent back to Italy, notwithstanding the fact that University College, London, asked for his release in order to enable him to complete his course for a Master of Science degree?

Mr. Isaacs

I cannot possibly answer the personal case raised but, on the first part of this supplementary question, I would say that university students are having exactly the same fair treatment as every other class.
