87. Mr. Wilson Harris

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether British and Russian troops were withdrawn from Persia by 2nd March.

Mr. Noel-Baker

All the British troops which had been in Iran were withdrawn within the time provided by the Treaty which was six months from the ending of hostilities with Germany or her associates. I have no information about the withdrawal of Soviet troops, except that contained in the reports from Moscow which have appeared in the Press. According to these reports, Soviet troops have not yet been withdrawn, but His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Moscow has been instructed to ask the Soviet Government what the real position is.
