HC Deb 05 June 1946 vol 423 c2006
77 Lieut.-Commander Joynson-Hicks

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that the unseasonable weather has considerably retarded the ripening of the strawberry crop; and if he will, accordingly, extend the closing date of the period fixed for the growers' price of 175s. per cwt. from 9th June to 23rd June.

Mr. Strachey

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply given on 29th May to my hon. Friend the Member for Winchester (Mr. Jeger), to which there is nothing which I can usefully add.

Lieut.-Commander Joynson-Hicks

In view of the fact that the previous reply caused great dissatisfaction to the growers in question, will the right hon. Gentleman reconsider the matter au fond?

Mr. Strachey

I am willing to consider it, but I am advised that the only remedy, which would be to vary the dates of the' price drop with the variation of the season, presents the greatest difficulties.
