HC Deb 04 June 1946 vol 423 c1794
23. Mr. Marples

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what arrangements he is making for employment in the mines of those Polish soldiers who wish to work in the mines, and who will be returning to this country under the scheme recently announced.

Mr. Gaitskell

Steps are being taken to identify the Polish soldiers who have had underground coalmining experience, and who are sufficiently acquainted with the English language to work safely in British mines. Those who are willing will then be placed in British mines, subject to the necessary consultation and agreement of the trade union representatives.

Mr. Marples

Have any steps been taken to obtain agreement?

Mr. Gaitskell

The matter has been discussed with the National Union of Mineworkers.
