HC Deb 04 June 1946 vol 423 c1816
79. Major Symonds

asked the Secretary of State for War if he has now any further statement to make on the removal of the ban on marriages between British soldiers and Austrian subjects.

Mr. Lawson

His Majesty's Government are now considering the question of marriages between British Servicemen and Austrians.

Major Symonds

While this consideration is going on, are we to take it that there is one law for officers and men still in Austria, and another for officers who are able in some way to bring their prospective brides to this country?

Mr. Lawson

There are a number of Questions on the particular incident to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers, but I can assure him that the same rule applies to both officers and men.

Mr. Benn Levy

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this same answer has been returned to this same Question for a period now dating back to October last year, and that no date has been promised as to when a decision is likely to be given? Can he give one now?

Mr. Lawson

No, Sir. This matter has not been before the Government before, and I have replied that the Government are now considering this matter.
