57. Major Lloydasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether contributions can, and will, be made towards the costs of local authorities in engaging staff to study, master and carry out the duties incidental to the continuing issue of regulations, orders and circulars by Government Departments, which are becoming increasingly burdensome to present staffs, who have cither to work overtime or neglect the proper duties of their office.
§ Mr. DaltonNo, Sir.
Major LloydWill the Chancellor give very close attention to this important matter and cause inquiries to be made, because I can assure him there is overwhelming evidence of great exhaustion amongst many individuals employed by local authorities through overwork?
§ Mr. DaltonThat may not be limited to staffs of local authorities after six years of war. I see no grounds for giving the subsidy for which this Question asks to this particular line of Government activity. The Question relates to money and not to exhaustion.
Major LloydSurely it is wrong to give these extra duties to local authorities and not give some extra assistance?
§ Mr. DaltonThe grants made to local authorities are already very substantial.
