HC Deb 31 July 1946 vol 426 c932
40. Major Legge-Bourke

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what amounts were involved in the destruction of food left behind in Nigeria by U.S. troops; and why better use was not made of these supplies.

Mr. George Hall

I have no information about this matter, but I will make inquiries from the Governor and let the hon. and gallant Member know as soon as I get a reply.

Mr. Godfrey Nicholson

There are allegations that large quantities of military stores in West African Colonies are being destroyed or going to be destroyed or dumped into the sea. Will the right hon. Gentleman direct his attention to that?

Mr. Hall

I certainly will—

Mr. Nicholson

I do not associate myself with that, but I have heard the stories.

Mr. Hall

—but I have not heard any suggestion that that was the case. When I was in West Africa in January that subject came under discussion and I was assured that there was a surplus only of Army lorries.

Mr. Nicholson

Can the right hon. Gentleman extend that assurance to medical stores?

Mr. Hall

I will have inquiries made.
