HC Deb 30 July 1946 vol 426 cc752-3
3. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether, in view of the increase of rationed petrol, he will now provide for French, Belgian and other tourists visiting this country as much petrol as France, Belgium and other countries provide for British tourists.

The Minister of Fuel and Power (Mr. Shinwell)

In the Debate on the Motion for the Adjournment on nth July, I made it clear that any relexation of the petrol restrictions would operate to benefit the British public and not foreign tourists coming to this country. Such tourists are eligible for petrol allowances at the rates currently in force and I am not able to agree to authorise exceptional treatment in their case.

Mr. Janner

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that tourists coming into this country benefit the British public, and would he not reconsider his decision in the light of this valuable idea?

Mr. Shinwell

I am all for encouraging foreign tourists to come to this country, but I am afraid I cannot relax the restrictions.
