HC Deb 30 July 1946 vol 426 c759
13. Lieut-Commander Clark Hutchison

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of former brickmakers, released under Class B, who have been directed to resume work in brickyards under Service conditions; and how many of these men have been directed to work in brickyards in Scotland.

Mr. Ness Edwards

Men released in Class B are not employed under Service conditions, but I presume the hon. and gallant Member has in mind former brickmakers posted to brickyards as members of the Forces as an alternative to release in Class B. The number who had been so posted up to 15th July was 247, of whom six were posted to brickyards in Scotland.

Lieut.-Commander Hutchison

Does the hon. Gentleman regard that as satisfactory, having regard to the shortage of bricks in Scotland?

Mr. Edwards

The Forces are being combed for all the brickyard employees we can get. These special steps have been taken, and any men who will take release in Class B certainly will be released for this purpose.
