HC Deb 24 July 1946 vol 426 c39
74. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Food what steps he is taking, in conjunction with the Herring Industry Board or otherwise, to use herring for conversion into oil, fish meal, margarine and soap; and what is being done in collaboration with other appropriate Departments to develop these industries in Aberdeen.

Dr. Summerskill

My right hon. Friend has recently set up a Committee of Inquiry, on which his Department, the Scottish Home Department and the Herring Industry Board are represented, to examine the possibilities of converting herrings into oil and meal. The suitability of Aberdeen will no doubt be considered by the committee.

Mr. Hughes

When will this committee begin work?

Dr. Summerskill

The committee has already begun.

Mr. Douglas Marshall

Will the hon. Lady take pilchards into consideration?
