HC Deb 24 July 1946 vol 426 cc28-9
49. Lieut.-Colonel Clifton-Brown

asked the Minister of Food whether he will restore the cut imposed on 2nd May in the sugar ration to the bakery trade, since it has been proved that the more sugar the confectioners have the less flour they use.

Dr. Sunimerskill

Yes, Sir, my right hon. Friend has already announced that the reduction in the allocation of sugar to the bakery trade will be restored as from 18th August.

Lieut.-Colonel Clifton-Brown

Why is it necessary to wait until the end of August? Why was it not done when bread rationing started?

Dr. Summerskill

Because the allocation period is eight weeks, and from an administrative point of view it is better to wait until that date.
