HC Deb 22 July 1946 vol 425 c1658
25. Mr. Gallacher

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will consider the reduction of raw material for plastic products that are only marketable because of a shortage in cotton goods, in order to increase supplies for the maintenance of the staple plastics industries.

Sir S. Cripps

The plastic products which are being marketed as alternatives to certain textile goods are made from polyvinyl chloride. Discussions regarding the distribution of this material are taking place with the producers and users in the plastics industry, and steps have already been taken to ensure adequate supplies for the more important purposes.

Mr. Gallacher

Will the President of the Board of Trade take note of the fact that there is a plastics industry in Scotland that is threatened with closing down, that it is very undesirable that we should have any new industries closing down, and will he see to it that supplies of raw material are available to keep the industry going?

Sir S. Cripps

Certainly.
