54. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Food if, in view of the present food shortage, he will consider increasing the penalties for infringement of the food regulations by imposing penal servitude and hard labour as the minimum sentence when found guilty.

Mr. Strachey

The scale of penalties imposed by the courts, which include sentences of imprisonment of 18 months, appears adequate.
