HC Deb 28 February 1946 vol 419 cc2084-5
16. Lieut.-Colonel Rees-Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take the necessary steps to extend the provisions of the Adoption of Children Act, 1926, so as to provide for the adoption by persons of British nationality of foreign children.

Mr. Ede

The object of the provision in the Act of 1926 excluding any infant who is not a British subject was, I understand, to prevent any conflict between the legal status of the child in this country and his legal status under the law of the foreign country of which he is a national. Whether it is necessary to retain or modify this limitation will be considered whenever there is amending legislation, but I am not in a position to hold out any hope of such legislation in the near future.
