§ 42. Major Wyattasked the Minister of Labour whether he will consider deferring the call-up for military service of skilled toolmakers.
§ Mr. IsaacsWhile the needs of the Forces make it impossible to defer the call-up of all tool makers, the current arrangements allow of their deferment where this is considered essential in the national interest.
§ Major WyattIs my right hon. Friend aware that several toolmaking firms in Birmingham have been obliged to cancel some of their contracts for the export trade because they are losing their skilled toolmakers who are being called up for service in the Armed Forces? And would he please look into the matter again?
§ Mr. IsaacsI will look into the matter if the hon. and gallant Gentleman will give me particulars.
§ Mr. OsborneMight I ask if the Minister would consider deferring the calling up of apprentice tool makers, which, in my opinion, is equally important?
§ Mr. IsaacsYes, Sir, but I also have to bear in mind the need for young men to go into the Forces in order that older soldiers can get out.
§ Major Peter RobertsWill the Minister bear in mind that skilled draughtsmen are just as important as skilled tool makers?
