HC Deb 25 February 1946 vol 419 cc1557-8
52. Mr. Butcher

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will give an assurance that members of the W.L.A. living in hostels of the Holland division of Lincolnshire will not be turned out in favour of German or Italian prisoners whilst there is available in the same area unoccupied Army property formerly used by searchlight detachments of His Majesty's Army.

Mr. T. Williams

By arrangement with the Women's Land Army, three hutment hostels in the Holland Division of Lincolnshire not in full use are being given up and their occupants transferred to other partially occupied W.L.A. hostels in the county. The accommodation thus freed, and also any suitable former searchlight sites that may be available, will be used, as required, for housing German prisoners of war to be employed in agriculture.

Mr. Butcher

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that if the conditions of the Women's Land Army were made more satisfactory, it would be quite easy to recruit for it and to fill these hostels, and not to dispossess English girls who have been there three or more years in favour of German prisoners?
