73. Mr. E. P. Smithasked the President of the Board of Trade the long-term policy of His Majesty's Government towards world tourist traffic to the United Kingdom; and what practical steps His Majesty's Government are taking to encourage it.
§ Sir S. CrippsHis Majesty's Government fully appreciate the importance of encouraging tourist traffic to the United Kingdom as soon as circumstances permit and, to this end, as was stated by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 28th January, it is intended to increase the grant in aid to the Travel Association of Great Britain and Ireland for the year 1946–47 so that essential preparatory work may be put in hand. I would also add that the Report of the Catering Wages Commission is now under consideration.
Mr. E. P. SmithCan the right hon. Gentleman say whether he considers that the amount of the grant in aid is sufficient?
§ Sir S. CrippsI am sure that it will be adequate.
§ Mr. WalkdenWill the Minister ensure that these tourists do not get extra clothing?
§ Sir Ronald RossWill the right hon. and learned Gentleman make sure that part of that grant does not go to Eire because he referred to the Travel Association of Great Britain and Ireland?
§ Sir S. CrippsI am afraid that the hon. Gentleman will have to put that Question on the Order Paper.
