HC Deb 25 February 1946 vol 419 cc1567-8
84. Mrs. Middleton

asked the Under-secretary of State for India whether he is aware that the conditions in the Deolali Camp, India Command, are far from satisfactory as regards the amount and quality of the food provided, the cleanliness of the camp and the general conditions under which the ordinary soldier has to live; and whether he will see that the complaints of the men, on these grounds, are thoroughly investigated and steps taken speedily to bring about an all round improvement in the conditions there.

The Under-Secretary of State for India (Mr. Arthur Henderson)

I am not aware that conditions in Deolali are unsatisfactory. I have, however, received complaints recently regarding the standard and quantity of food, the alleged lack of drinking water and hot water for washing purposes. These are being investigated by the authorities in India. As there are several camps at Deolali, per- haps my hon. Friend will furnish me with details of the particular camp so that I can make further inquiries.
