HC Deb 20 February 1946 vol 419 c1154
58. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Food whether, in order to provide additional variety of diet and in connection with the present system of bulk buying from government to government, consideration will be given to providing machinery to purchase comparatively small quantities of all kinds of foodstuffs although the quantities purchased may be insufficient to provide a complete ration but could be distributed on a points system.

Sir B. Smith

Within the limits of the financial resources available, a wide range of miscellaneous foodstuffs, that can be secured only in relatively small quantities, is imported under the supervision of my Department, for distribution through the points scheme, or otherwise, and additional machinery does not appear to be necessary.

Mr. De la Bère

Is the Minister aware that more variety is vitally necessary, and that variety is the spice of life?

Sir B. Smith

Yes, Sir.
