HC Deb 20 February 1946 vol 419 cc1145-6
45. Mr. Orbach

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster for what reasons Latvians, Lithuanians and Esthonians," employed previous to the Nazi collapse by the Reich Ministry for Eastern Affairs, are now allowed special rations as displaced persons, receive Red Cross parcels and axe housed in British Government camps or the homes of forcibly-evacuated Germans; and if he is aware that many of these persons are engaged in anti-United Nations propaganda.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Mr. John Hynd)

Baltic persons now in Germany who are of German extraction and acquired German nationality in 1939-41 are considered and treated as Germans and not as displaced persons. Those Baltic persons, however, who are not of German extraction and have not acquired German nationality are treated as displaced persons in accordance with general policy. The question whether it will be practicable to refuse displaced status to persons such as those referred to by my hon. Friend who were willing or unwilling tools of the enemy is part of a wider question which is receiving consideration. Propaganda directed against any of the United Nations is strictly forbidden in all displaced persons assembly centres.

Mr. Orbach

Will the hon. Gentleman cause special inquiries to be- made into the camps at Detmold and Bromberg in.Westphalia?

Mr. Hynd

If the hon. Gentleman, will give me some indication what we are to inquire into, I will be very glad to do so.

Mr. Orbach

Into the anti-United Nations propaganda.
