HC Deb 13 February 1946 vol 419 c363
4. Mr. Drayson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the total sum now in the hands of the Government of Uganda as a result of the coffee and cotton control funds; and whether it has yet been decided how this should be expended.

Mr. George Hall

The total sum in the hands of the Government of Uganda was approximately£4,684,000 at the end of 1945. In an interim report submitted in July, 1945, the committee appointed to advise the Governor on the disposal of the funds recommended that£2,000,000 should be devoted to the economic development of the cotton and coffee industries. This would leave£3,000,000 for general development and welfare in the producing areas out of the total of£5,000,000 expected ultimately to be available. No decision as to the disposal of the funds has yet been taken, as the matter is one which must be considered in conjunction with Uganda's comprehensive development programme and this is still in preparation.
