HC Deb 13 February 1946 vol 419 cc380-1
39. Mr. Stokes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what progress has been made with the evacuation of Syria and the Lebanon by British and French troops; and when he expects this evacuation to be completed.

Mr. Bevin

The plans for the withdrawal of British and French troops, which were being worked out by the military authorities in Beirut according to the recent Anglo-French Agreement, have had to be suspended pending the reference of certain points to the two Governments. I hope that progress will be resumed before long.

Mr. Stokes

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he can confirm the assurance already given in this House that, eventually, the withdrawal of French and British troops will be completed?

Mr. Bevin

So far as I am concerned, the withdrawal of British troops will be completed.
