HC Deb 12 December 1946 vol 431 c1307
1. Mr. James Callaghan

asked the Minister of Education if she will try to arrange with the U.S.S.R. that the elementary Russian language lessons about to be broadcast from Moscow in the evenings shall be made available by recordings or otherwise for retransmission to schools during the day.

The Minister of Education (Miss Ellen Wilkinson)

No, Sir.

Mr. Callaghan

Why not?

Miss Wilkinson

Because these programmes are intended for grown-ups, and I do not think they are suitable for children.

Mr. Callaghan

But do not the children speak the same language as ourselves?

Miss Wilkinson

I hope not. But in any case, these programmes are specifically prepared for adults.
