HC Deb 04 December 1946 vol 431 c322
64. Mr. Edelman

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether there has been any change in the arrangement whereby newspapers and periodicals can be sent to the British zone of Germany only through a publisher, newsagent or bookseller.

Mr. J. Hynd

Yes, Sir, private individuals in this country may now send newspapers and periodicals direct to individuals in the British zone of Germany and the British sector of Berlin. Details of the revised scheme are being published by the Postmaster-General. Similar arrangements, in respect of English language newspapers and periodicals, have been made in all Empire countries, India and the United States of America.

Mr. Wilson Harris

Could the hon. Gentleman say whether that applies to books also, or only to periodicals?

Mr. Hynd

Books, at the present time, can be sent to Germany through the Save Europe Now Scheme, and there is no immediate extension of the facilities contemplated at the moment.
