HC Deb 04 December 1946 vol 431 c326
30. Mr. Stokes

asked the Chancellor of of the Duchy of Lancaster whether instructions have now been given to stop the destruction of the deep-water wharves and piers at Kiel so that ocean-going vessels can put in for ordinary legitimate peacetime trading purposes.

Mr. J. Hynd

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave to his earlier Question on 14th October. Full consideration has been, and is being, given to the preservation of facilities required for peaceful trade at Kiel.

Mr. Stokes

Am I to understand from my hon. Friend's reply that the Government have now changed their policy, and that it is not intended to limit the ships to small vessels of 1,250 tons capacity?

Mr. Hynd

The reply which I gave in answer to my hon. Friend's earlier Question indicated that we were proceeding to deal with the naval installations and the naval quays at Kiel, but that the deep water and other facilities which can be useful for peacetime purposes are being considered for such purposes.
