HC Deb 11 April 1946 vol 421 c2092
46. Mr. Gammans

asked the Prime Minister if the speech of the Minister of Fuel and Power on 6th April, regarding the nationalisation of the motor industry, represents the policy of His Majesty's Government.

The Prime Minister

My right hon. Friend was replying to a statement made by a motor manufacturer about Government policy He aid not announce any new policy but issued a general warning which has been issued before by leading Members of the Government.

Mr. Gammans

In view of the conflicting statements which are continually being made by Ministers—[An HON. MEMBER: "We understand them."]—will the Prime Minister either re-establish the principle of Cabinet responsibility or appoint a spokesman upon whose pronouncements some reliance can be placed?

The Prime Minister

The hon. Member is wrong in thinking there has been contradiction. I am sure that any such restriction would have been resented by Members of Governments in the past, as it would be in the present.
