§ 44. Mr. Peter Freemanasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that landlords are pressing tenants to sign undertakings that they will not accept Indian and other dark-skinned citizens as lodgers; and if he will introduce legislation to prevent such colour-bar barriers.
§ The Minister of Health (Mr. Aneurin Bevan)I have received no information on the subject. If my hon. Friend has information which he cares to send me, I will consider it, but in any event there will be no opportunity for legislation in the present Session.
§ Mr. FreemanIs my right hon. Friend aware that 700 or 800 students recently came to this country and have very great difficulty in finding suitable lodgings because of the colour bar? Will he take some steps to find opportunities for them?
§ Mr. BevanThere are difficulties, of course, in finding accommodation everywhere, but if special obstacles are being erected against these students, I will certainly investigate the matter if my hon. Friend will let me have the information in his possession.
