HC Deb 11 April 1946 vol 421 c2074
25. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of persons over any recent convenient period in Great Britain convicted of crime were so convicted a second and a third time.

Mr. Ede

The last occasion on which the criminal records were analysed for the purpose of obtaining statistics as to reconviction rates was in 1938; and I am sending to my hon. and learned Friend extracts from the volume of the Criminal Statistics which contains the results of that analysis.

Mr. Hughes

Would the Minister state what special steps are taken to prevent young offenders in the first class from falling into the other two classes?

Mr. Ede

I do not think I could detail them in answer to a question. Doubtless on the Estimates or on some other suitable occasion I shall be able to deal with the matter.
