HC Deb 10 April 1946 vol 421 cc1917-8
43. Earl Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what acknowledgement has been sent to the people of Northern Rhodesia for their munificent gift of food to this country.

The Secretary of State for the Conies (Mr. George Hall)

I sent a message in January to the Governor of Northern Rhodesia expressing the deer appreciation felt in this country for the proposal of the people of Northern Rhodesia to raise £20,000 for the purchase of food for Great Britain. The fund is expected to close this month; and on receipt of this generous gift a further expression of thanks will be sent.

Earl Winterton

Would the right hon. Gentleman consider, in all these cases where Colonies and territories give food to this country, issuing a statement to the Press thanking them, in view of the fact that no information about this particular gift has been published in any of the English newspapers?

Mr. Hall

I will certainly consider that.
