§ 14. Mr. Edelmanasked the Minister of Works whether, in view of the difficulties of obtaining plate glass for shop windows in Coventry, he will increase local supplies and simplify methods of acquisition by enlarging the power of the city architects' department to issue licences.
§ Mr. TomlinsonThe output of plate glass though higher than prewar is at present below the heavy demand consequent upon the widespread damage to plate glass windows by enemy action. Plate glass has, therefore, to be rationed and any increase in the supply to Coventry could only be made at the expense of the other areas. An arrangement under which the local authority issues permits for the use of such quantities as can be made available in the area should be the most suitable arrangement for ensuring fair treatment all round.
§ Mr. McGovernMay I ask the Minister if anything has been done to increase the production of plate glass owing to the acute shortage?
§ Mr. TomlinsonYes, Sir, plans have been accepted for an extension of the available plant.
