asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can make any further statement regarding the continued payment of a pension to the heirs of the brother of Horatio, Lord Nelson.

Mr. Dalton

Yes, Sir. H. M. Government have decided to introduce legislation terminating this annuity on the death of the present earl or of his heir, his brother, should he survive him. The Bill will also provide for releasing the Trafalgar Estate, which was bestowed on the first Lord Nelson's brother and his successors under the Act of 1806, from certain of the statutory restrictions imposed by that Act. The estate will then be put in the same position as an ordinary settled estate under the Settled Land Acts.

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that the statement he has made will be welcomed as representing equity tempered by liberality?

Are we to understand from the reply that similar steps are to be taken with other pensions of a similar kind?

There are no other pensions of a similar kind.
