HC Deb 09 April 1946 vol 421 c1770
3. Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Works if he will take immediate steps to replace the broken windows throughout the Palace of Westminster and, in particular, in the Central Lobby, in view of the fact that more glass is being exported from this country today than in 1938.

The Minister of Works Tomlinson)

The replacement of clear glass windows in the Palace of Westminster has already been largely effected, with the exception of Committee Rooms and other places where such work during the sitting of the House would cause inconvenience. No difficulty is expected in obtaining clear glass, and reglazing will he completed as the business of the House permits. The replacement of the stained glass windows of the Chamber of this House will be resumed in the coming Recess. The glass and probably the window frames for the Central Lobby and St. Stephen's Hall will have to he specially made, and it will be some time before the work can be carried out.

Mr. Osborne

Is the Minister aware that the Central Lobby, especially when there are big deputations, is a very dark, dirty and stinking place? Cannot something be done in the matter?

Mr. Tomlinson

I just do not recognise that description.
