HC Deb 08 April 1946 vol 421 cc1655-6
102. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Transport what is the compulsory retirement age of persons employed by the L.P.T.B.; which directors of the Board are over this age; and whether the same age of retirement will apply to directors as to employees.

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Barnes)

The general age of compulsory retirement for officers and servants of the London Passenger Transport Board is 65 for men and 60 for women. Since the outbreak of war the rule as to compulsory retirement has been in abeyance. Under the Statute, Members of the Board are appointed for terms of not less than three or more than seven years, and no question of age limit arises.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Does not my right hon. Friend think it would be desirable to have the same age limit applicable to all persons in the pay of the L.P.T.B.?

Mr. Barnes

At this moment I am governed by the Statute and I see no advantage in expressing a personal opinion.
