HC Deb 04 April 1946 vol 421 cc1394-5
55. Major John Morrison

asked the Minister of Labour what encouragement is being given to rural craftsmen such as blacksmiths and thatchers in the agricultural training schemes.

Mr. Ness Edwards

A course of vocational training for agricultural blacksmiths has been agreed with the industrial interests concerned and the Rural Industries Bureau, and classes are being established at several Government training centres. Representations have been made that more thatchers are needed it Devonshire and a training scheme for this craft is being considered.

Major Morrison

Will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that there have been a number of openings in these crafts for many years, and will he give every encouragement for the training of men for these crafts?

Mr. Ness Edwards

Certainly, Sir.

Mr. Skeffington-Lodge

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that the decaying craftsmanship in this country, in many directions, is a thoroughly deplorable thing, and will he do all that he can to ensure that these men have their niche in our national life?

Mr. Ness Edwards

We have a full training scheme for craftsmen
