HC Deb 04 April 1946 vol 421 cc1375-6
11 Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Health whether entitlement to postwar credits and to value payments under the War Damage Acts is disregarded in assessing the means of applicants for public assistance.

Mr. Bevan

A title to receive a money payment at some future date does not, in general, affect the amount of public assistance to be given to an applicant. but the Public Assistance authority may decide, by reason of such a title, that the assistance should be given by way of loan.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware how indefensible it is—to quote just one example—that a constituent of mine should die in poverty awaiting admission to a London County Council institution, while a sum of £900 was due to her by way of a value payment from the War Damage Commission?

Mr. Bevan

If the hon. and gallant Member will send me particulars of that case I will have it inquired into.
