HC Deb 04 April 1946 vol 421 cc1372-3
4. Captain Baird

asked the Minister of Health if he will now state what steps he intends to take to implement the findings of the Teviot Report on Dentistry with regard to the shortage of dentists.

6. Mr. Robens

asked the Minister of Health whether he has yet considered the Final Report of the Inter-Departmental Committee on Dentistry, and when a statement may be expected upon it.

Mr. Bevan

I hope to make a statement on this subject soon.

Captain Baird

Will the Minister consider the important part that dentists play in modern medicine, and will be bear in mind that there are large numbers of working-class boys and girls who have both the ability and the desire to become dental surgeons but who have not the financial means? Will he also consider that during the war large numbers of other ranks served as dental clerks and dental orderlies, and will facilities be provided for them to undergo further training?

Mr. Bevan

I am keenly appreciative of the shortage of dentists in this country. In fact, we will not be able to start the new health service unless we have a very substantial increase in the number of trained dentists. I hope to remove any financial disability.
