§ 35. Sir Robert Youngasked the Minister of Education how many teachers who, as conscientious objectors, were retained in the teaching profession and to what extent, as such, they suffered a reduction of salary; and when normal salaries will be again paid to them.
§ Miss WilkinsonAs regards the first two parts of the question, I regret that I have no detailed information. As regards the last part, as from 1st April,1945, it is an obligation on local education authorities to remunerate all fulltime teachers employed in schools maintained by them in accordance with the scales prescribed in the Reports of the Burnham Committee.
§ Sir R. Youngis the right hon. Lady aware that some of these conscientious objectors are still being fined about a year? May they not do their normal teaching work on full pay rates?
§ Miss WilkinsonWhere they are employed full time by local education authorities they are bound to be paid according to the Burnham scale.
§ Mr. GammansDoes the right hon. Lady say she has not the faintest idea whether the conscientious objectors have suffered a reduction in salaries or not? Do I understand her aright?
§ Miss WilkinsonWhat you understand is what I said—[Interruption.]
§ An Hon. Member: "You" means Mr. Deputy-Speaker.
§ Miss WilkinsonMr. Deputy-Speaker always understands. I would call the hon. Gentleman's attention to the fact that it is an obligation on local authorities to pay all full-time teachers employed in schools maintained by them the Burnham scale, as and from 1st April last year.
