HC Deb 01 April 1946 vol 421 cc798-9
4. Mr. Thomas Macpherson

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that on the recently reinstated Green Line omnibus services between Romford and London no return tickets or weekly season tickets are available; and if he will arrange for these facilities to be provided in the interests of regular passengers going to and from their work by this system.

Mr. Barnes

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for Enfield (Mr. Ernest Davies) on 25th March. In the review which I then promised, I shall include also the question of issuing season tickets.

Mr. Macpherson

Is my right hon. Friend aware that a quarterly ticket between Romford and London costs £4 9s. 3d. and that for the same facilities on a Green Line omnibus the cost is fro 6s. 8d.? Is he aware that the Green Line omnibuses today are travelling to and from London half empty because the public cannot afford to pay these high charges?

Mr. Barnes

I think my hon. Friend is aware that we have not yet got away from the difficulties and inequalities of the various transport systems arising from the war. The restarting of the Green Line service was to increase traffic opportunities. I must keep in mind the reaction of other forms of travel.

Mr. Solley

Would my right hon. Friend also keep in mind the omnibus service between Grays and London in respect of which the remarks of the hon. Member for Romford (Mr. T. Macpherson) likewise apply?

Mr. Barnes

Yes, Sir.
