asked the Minister of Labour what reply he has made to the representations recently made to him to institute an inquiry into the numbers of staff employed by the various Ministries, with a view to replacing immediately the skilled men now being withdrawn from export industries and other trades vital to recovery.

I have seen the letter to which I understand the hon. Member refers. A reply was sent giving an assurance that we had not overlooked the possibility of drawing upon redundant labour in Government establishments for the purpose of meeting other demands.

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the acute situation which is developing on account of the withdrawal of young key men from the export industries, as the strikes now taking place indicate?
