HC Deb 20 November 1945 vol 416 cc231-2
65. Captain Chetwynd

asked the Secretary to the Treasury to what extent Government financial assistance has been granted to the Y.M.C.A. during the war.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

I will, with permission, circulate details in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following are the details:

The Ministry of Education has made annual grants towards the headquarters expenses of the Y.M.C.A. which for the years 1939–40–1944–45 inclusive totalled £26,550. Small grants to individual local units of the organisation were also made during these years, the figures for 1944–45 being £11,084; figures for the earlier war years are not immediately available. The Admiralty and the Air Ministry have from time to time made small grants in respect of overseas hostels and the War Office assists the Y.M.C.A., among other voluntary bodies, by paying the rent, rates, maintenance, heating, lighting and cleaning charges of hostels run for all three Services.
