HC Deb 20 November 1945 vol 416 cc224-5
58. Mr. Thurtle

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if citizens of Eire are eligible for entry into the British Civil Service.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Glenvil Hall)

Yes, Sir; on equal terms with other British subjects.

Mr. Thurtle

Can the hon. Gentleman give any logical explanation why citizens of an independent Republic should be allowed to become members of His Majesty's Civil Service?

Mr. Hall

The short answer is that citizens of Eire enjoy British citizenship and are members, like others, of the British Commonwealth.

Mr. Thurtle

Is the hon. Gentleman satisfied that there is no question of divided loyalty in cases of this kind?

Mr. Stokes

Is my hon. Friend aware that large numbers of citizens of Eire fought in the war, and therefore arc entitled to take employment of this description?
