HC Deb 07 November 1945 vol 415 cc1260-1
20. Mr. Driberg

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air how many Dakota or other transport aircraft, other than replacements, have been transferred from the United Kingdom or Europe to India and S.E.A.C. since VE-Day.

The Under-Secretary of State for Air (Mr. Strachey)

The number of transport aircraft in Air Command South-East Asia has increased by 45 per cent, since VE-Day. In addition, a number of bomber and maritime squadrons in South-East Asia have recently been employed on transport and supply duties. The number of aircraft established for transport services from United Kingdom to India is now more than four times greater than it was on VE-Day.

Mr. Driberg

Can we take it from that reply that my hon. Friend is now satisfied that the transport bottleneck in that part of the world is being dealt with adequately?

Mr. Strachey

I would not like to say, with so much transport being used.

Captain Prescott

Would it be possible to give figures instead of percentages?

Mr. Strachey

No, Sir, there are security objections to that.
