asked the Minister of Labour if he has any statement to make on the dock strike; and what steps he is taking to break the deadlock.

I would refer the hon. Member to the statement which I made on Tuesday last to which there is nothing I can usefully add today.

77 Mr. Lipson

asked the Minister of Labour what are the numbers of dock strikers and the number of soldiers employed in unloading ships.

Mr. Isaacs

As regards the first part of the Question, it is estimated that the number of dock workers on strike is approximately 43,000. As regards the second part, I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Minister of War Transport that the number of troops allocated for work in the docks is approximately 21,000.

Mr. Lipson

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether, in view of the facts that all cargoes brought to this country are essential supplies, he will take steps to see that the number of soldiers available is at least equivalent to the number of strikers?

Mr. Isaacs

Might I ask the indulgence of the House not to press any questions upon this matter, because there are very good prospects of something happening almost immediately?
