HC Deb 22 March 1945 vol 409 cc966-7
10. Major Kimball

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that formal invitations headed Ministry of Labour have been issued for the opening ceremony of the Loughborough Liberty Club on 23rd March; what is the purpose of this club; who authorised its establishment; and what did it cost.

Mr. Bevin

This club has been established by a Committee of local bodies and residents to provide recreational faciliities for war workers in Loughborough, particularly those living away from home. My Department is contributing to the costs incurred by meeting the expenses of necessary adaptations, equipment, etc., up to a maximum of £1,400. I have no information as to the form in which invitations to the opening ceremony have been issued.

Major Kimball

Would it not have been a matter of common courtesy for the officials to notify the local Member of Parliament?

Mr. Bevin

I am sorry if any Member of the House has been overlooked. I did not know that the invitations were going out until I got the Question. I think it will be agreed that I take the utmost care to notify Members.
