HC Deb 22 March 1945 vol 409 c969
18. Viscount Hinchingbrooke

asked the Secretary of State for India how many members of the Indian Legislative Assembly are now serving terms of imprisonment and, of those released, how many are precluded from attending or speaking in the Assembly; and for what period it is intended that this disability shall persist.

Mr. Amery

I regret that I am not in possession of the information desired, but I will make inquiries.

Mr. Shinwell

Will the right hon. Gentleman take the opportunity, when Lord Wavell, the Viceroy of India, is in this country at an early date, to discuss the desirability of the early release of political prisoners, and does he not realise that this would be a very desirable approach to a possible solution of this problem?

Mr. Amery

I hope to discuss all political issues, as well as a good many other issues, with Lord Wavell when he is in this country.

Mr. Shinwell

Will the right hon. Gentleman discuss this question with Lord Wavell?

Mr. Amery

I think the word "all" covers a good deal.
