HC Deb 22 March 1945 vol 409 c1005
Mr. H. Morrison

I have a short statement to make. I have decided, in consultation with the other Ministers concerned, to suspend the performance of duties under the Fire Guard Orders as from midday on Saturday, 24th March, in all areas where they are still being performed. The necessary instructions will be issued by the appropriate authorities as soon as possible. Should enemy attacks against this country make it necessary, I am sure fire guards will again resume duty promptly if called upon to do so. Although compulsory duties under the Fire Guard Orders are being suspended, it is still necessary to maintain a reasonable standard of Civil Defence arrangements in establishments which already have such arrangements. Fire Guard duty has been onerous and irksome, but its value to the country has been inestimable. I should like to acknowledge the debt we owe the Fire Guards for their constant vigilance in the defence of our industries and of our homes.
